Victim record SAM-1995-V004 · Samashki, Chechnya · First Russian-Chechen War

Original Cyrillic name: Акуев Зелимхан Юсупович — Born: 1979 — Date of death recorded by Memorial: 7 April 1995 — Location: Family courtyard, Samashki — Memorial source record: Appendix 3, no. 4 — Case category: Child killed by shell fragments

Documented circumstances

Zelimkhan Akuev, born in 1979, was approximately 15 or 16 years old when he died on 7 April 1995. He lived with his family in Samashki.

Memorial’s Appendix 3 records that Zelimkhan was wounded in his own courtyard by the explosion of a shell and died later the same day from internal bleeding. The same bombardment killed his mother, Nurbika Akueva, at the scene.

Memorial relied on evidence attributed to family members, a physician and documentary records, including a death certificate and the village funeral list. The appendix identifies Zelimkhan as entry no. 4 and Nurbika as entry no. 5. The report’s narrative section reverses these two entry numbers in a passing reference; the numbered appendix is used here as the catalogue authority.

Related documented victims: Nurbika Akueva — Zelimkhan’s mother, killed in the same shell explosion.

Sources and verification

Primary record: Memorial Human Rights Center, “By All Available Means… Operation of the Russian Interior Ministry in Samashki, 7–8 April 1995” (Russian, 1995), Appendix 3, entry 4. The narrative passages in the report are used only when they refer to this person or incident.

Further context: ICRC casebook — Operation Samashki (based on the Memorial investigation). The ICRC educational casebook is not an independent criminal verdict.

Editorial note: This page records a death and circumstances documented in Memorial’s investigative report. It does not independently establish the personal guilt of a named soldier. English Romanization is editorial; the original Cyrillic name governs. The birth year alone does not establish a precise age unless the source explicitly provides one. No verified portrait of this person has yet been added.
