Victim record SAM-1995-V073 · Samashki, Chechnya · First Russian-Chechen War
Original Cyrillic: Сурхашев Сайпи Баширович — Year of birth: 1928 — Death recorded by Memorial: 8 April 1995 — Location: Kooperativnaya Street, Samashki — Memorial Appendix 3: entry 73
Documented circumstances
Saypi Surkhashev, born in 1928, was paralysed and unable to leave his home on Kooperativnaya Street without assistance. During the military operation on 8 April 1995 the house was set on fire.
Memorial recorded Saypi’s death and referred to hospital documentation describing extensive third- and fourth-degree burns. His brother Said-Khasan reportedly attempted to rescue him from the house and was shot in the courtyard. The investigation considered it likely that Saypi died in the burning building, while the precise sequence of his final moments remained uncertain. This distinction is retained here.
